________

Discover the light of Christmas in a world of hardship and hope.

Home for Christmas brings inspiring stories of hope and second chances into the Advent season. Author and pastor Justin Coleman matches real life stories of struggle and triumph to the Advent themes of hope, love, joy, and peace to show how the light of Christmas shines brightly even in hard times. Each chapter lifts up a scripture reflection alongside tales of men and women who reflect on the Advent themes with love and longing.

Throughout each of the four chapters and the accompanying DVD for a small-group experience, Coleman captures the stories of formerly incarcerated men and women as they find work and opportunity through Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, California. These men and women share their memories and experiences in light of the hope and new life they’ve experienced at Homeboy.

Advent:
The Once and Future Coming of Jesus Christ.
Fleming Rutledge.
Pbk 426pp. ISBN 9780802876195.
Eerdmans (2018).
$62.00.
[Allow 4 weeks].

“Fleming Rutledge’s Advent preaching bursts upon us with the same elemental force as the preaching of John the Baptist. Rutledge’s fine crafting of language may be subtler than John’s, but she carries forward his incisive, apocalyptic message of judgment and hope. This is essential preaching for a church wallowing in self-referential sentimentality and caught in captivity to the compromises of the present political order. This is preaching that tells the truth about the world’s suffering and proclaims that God acts to rescue us. Do not drift anesthetized through another season of Advent; read this book.” Richard B. Hays — Duke University

Advent, says Fleming Rutledge, is not for the faint of heart. As the midnight of the Christian year, the season of Advent is rife with dark, gritty realities. In this book, with her trademark wit and wisdom, Rutledge explores Advent as a time of rich paradoxes, a season celebrating at once Christ’s incarnation and his second coming, and she masterfully unfolds the ethical and future-oriented significance of Advent for the church.

Christmas:
Myth, Magic and Legend: Making sense of the Christmas stories.
John Queripel.
Pbk 144pp. ISBN 9780648232353.
Wipf & Stock Publishers (2018).
$42.00.
[Allow 4 weeks].

A woman, both virgin and mother, a star moving at walking pace relative to the earth, turning, then moving in the contrary direction to all other astronomical objects before stopping over a particular town, a census called by an empire in such fashion that it would throw its normal efficiency into chaos, multitudes of angels declaring a saviour’s birth to shepherds with their flocks in the fields during the dead of winter, a pogrom carried out by a tyrannical leader to rid himself of a peasant child perceived as threat.

Does any of this make sense to us in a modern world? Are these things believable as literal historical events? If not, do they still have meaning?

Queripel digs in and behind the stories to find their essential truth while disregarding the literalisms which get in the way of most people’s search. Deep and profound truths behind the stories come to life and a whole new and more transformative meaning begins to reveal itself.
