The Sins of Scripture

Spong’s chapter on the origins of the Hebrew Scriptures (The Old Testament) was an unexpected highlight for me.  The rest of the book was provocative and thoughtful too!

Echo Burning (Jack Reacher)

Way out back in Texas it’s hot, very hot. Reacher doesn’t want to get involved, but can’t let an innocent woman get convicted for murder without a fight.

NB: Book link is to a paperback edition, but you can select the Kindle edition easily on that page.

Tripwire (Thorndike Press Large Print Famous Authors Series)

Jack Reacher is trying to keep a low profile, but trouble has a way of finding him.  Another Lee Child page turner.

NB: Book link is to the hardback edition, but you can select the Kindle edition easily on that page.

The Ark Before Noah: Decoding the Story of the Flood

I based a worship service around the ideas in this book earlier in the year.

I recommend you listen to Finkel’s podcast interview with BBC History magazine here, http://www.historyextra.com/podcast/babylonian-noah-and-norse-mythology then buy the book. Finkel is a totally engaging speaker.

How Jesus Became God: The Exaltation of a Jewish Preacher from Galilee

2nd best book I have read this year. (Crossan’s Birth of Christianity below is the best so far).

Ehrman added many more layers of understanding about how a Galilean peasant came to be seen as the Christ.

Delirium (London Psychic Book 2)

Our heroine, introduced in Descration, is confrontedwith with a mind-bending evil schemer.  Read this in one sitting.

Desecration (London Psychic Book 1)

Joanna introduces a new series heroine. Gritty & gory , but with a satisfying end.

Day of the Vikings. A Thriller. (ARKANE Book 5)

Dark and fast-paced, short thriller from Joanna Penn.

 Holy Bible (NIV)

Sound paraphrase translation. This edition features the revised 2011 text which is now more inclusive.

Jesus for the Non-Religious

John Shelby Spong (Author)

I appreciate the way Spong fearlessly strips away the religious dogma surrounding Jesus, to present a picture of a man whose message is worthwhile following today.

Spongs points the way to a fresh approach to Christian faith, that doesn’t require us to believe the unbelievable.

Christian Beginnings

 Geza Vermes. (Author)

Reknown Dead Sea Scrolls scholar Vermes, traces the development of Christianity from Jesus to the Council of Nicea in 325.

NB: Link is to the paperback edition, but you can select the Kindle edition easily on that page

The Birth of Christianity

John Dominic Crossan (Author)

This is the best book I’ve read this year so far.

This is a big, academic volume in which Crossan delves into topics like the accuracy of oral memory, the socio-economic situation in Galilee in Jesus’ time and lots of other fascinating topics.

I’m interested to find out what were Jesus original teachings and about the earliest oral traditions of Jesus first followers, on which the gospels were later based. We can never know exactly, but Crossan gets pretty close in this book.

Holy Bible – Message version (Numbered Edition)

Eugene H. Peterson (Translator)

I turn to Peterson’s The Message translation when I’m looking for a new slant on a scripture passage. His informal, storyteller style often sparks a new train of thought.

Persuader (Jack Reacher, No. 7)

Lee Child (Author)

NB: Link is to the hardback edition, but you can select the Kindle edition easily on that page

The Hobbit

J.R.R. Tolkien (Author)

A lightweight romp compared to the Lord of the Rings, but still good fun.

Looking forward to the last of local director Peter Jackson’s film trilogy later this year

Flight Plan: The Real Secret of Success

  Brian Tracy (Author)

Borrowed this first as an audio book from the local public library read by Brian Tracy himself.

The author has a down-to-earth positive approach to life and business planning which really struck a chord with me.

I haven’t yet been disciplined enough to write up a full plan as he suggests, but have been able to identify and act on a couple of key pieces of his advice this year.

The Lord of the Rings: 50th Anniversary, One Vol. Edition

J.R.R. Tolkien (Author)

I was delighted to find that this long-time favourite book of mine works just as well on a Kindle as in print.  Being able to adjust the font size and screen brightness made this a comfortable read.

NB: Link is to the paperback edition, but you can select the Kindle edition easily on that page

Never Go Back (with bonus novella High Heat): A Jack Reacher Novel

Lee Child (Author)

NB: Link is to the paperback edition, but you can select the Kindle edition easily on that page

The Power of Parable: How Fiction by Jesus Became Fiction about Jesus

John Dominic Crossan (Author)

Fascinated by Crossan’s categorisation of parables as either Riddle, Example or Challenge Parables.

NB: Link is to the paperback edition, but you can select the Kindle edition easily on that page.

Born of a Woman

John Shelby Spong (Author)

Written 1992, but still thought-provoking and valid.  Am making use of some of these ideas in the service I’m leading on 22 Dec 2013.

CyberStorm

Matthew Mather (Author)

New York is hit by a massive snowstorm and an apparent cyber attack as all online networks go down at the same time. Civil society breaks down as people struggle to find food and keep warm. Was drawn into the story and main character’s lives.

The Search for Jesus: Modern Scholarship Looks at the Gospels

2013 Kindle release of 1993 book of lectures at The Smithsonian.

Stephen J. Patterson (Author), Marcus J. Borg (Author), John Dominic Crossan (Author), Hershel Shanks (Editor)

I found the analysis of the accuracy of handing down stories by oral tradition enlightening.  The conclusion was that oral tradition can’t be relied on as an accurate means of transmitting historical facts.

One Day In Budapest

J F Penn (Author)

Next adventure for Joanna Penn’s heroine Morgan Sierra. Short, page-turner. Touches on rise of right-wing nationalism in Hungary, with a religious twist.

The Social Media Gospel

Do you have the nagging feeling that your church should be doing something about ministry/outreach in the social media space with facebook, twitter, blogs. Or do you want to better target your church’s existing efforts. Meredith Gould’s book is full of ready to-use-ideas and links.

How To Market A Book

Joanna Penn (Author)

Thought twice about listing this one – read this and you won’t need a publisher to help produce and sell your books!

Not only does she write top thrillers, Joanna Penn has a superb website where she generously shares heaps of up-to-date  info and ideas about eBooks and online marketing. See The Creative Penn.

I wish I had the time and energy to pursue all the great ideas in this book.

The Cloud

Techno-thriller. Kept me second guessing.

WordPress To Go – How To Build A WordPress Website On Your Own Domain, From Scratch, Even If You Are A Complete Beginner

Knew I needed to upgrade this website from Frontpage to WordPress – but where to start? Found this book helpful and have used quite a few of the ideas in it.

Exodus, An ARKANE Thriller (Book 3)

J F Penn (Author)

Joanna Penn takes the Bible story of the Ark of the Covenant as her starting point. Can the Ark be found today and what power does it hold? Ticked a lot of boxes for me: politics, religious power struggles, social justice, ripping good yarn…

Prophecy. An ARKANE thriller. (Book 2)

J F Penn (Author)

Morgan Sierra and her partner Jake have to track down and destroy the Devil’s Bible to stop an awful prophecy coming true. Deals with the abuse of absolute power.

I found this book pretty dark – you’ve been warned!

Pentecost. An ARKANE Thriller (Book 1)

J F Penn (Author)

Joanna Penn introduces her heroine Morgan Sierra and the ARKANE organisation. What if 12 fragments from the stone that covered Jesus’ tomb were given special power at the first Pentecost…? Couldn’t put it down.

Intriguing idea touched on in the plot: What if all the world’s great spiritual writings were entered into a database and their core common truths were sifted out?

Without Fail (Jack Reacher, No. 6)

Lee Child (Author)

Political thriller that kept me up late at night. Have read a bunch of Lee Child’s print books – they work fine as eBooks too!

Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography

John Dominic Crossan (Author)

John Dominic Crossan works back through the layers from Christ to find what we can about the historical Jesus. My kind of theology!

The Last Week

Marcus J. Borg (Author), John Dominic Crossan (Author)

Focusing on Mark’s Gospel, Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan take a fresh look at Passion Week. I found myself nodding in agreement all the way through this book.

 NRSV Bible with the Apocrypha

I now take my Kindle to church to follow the Bible readings for the day. You can bookmark the readings in advance then call them up when needed. Have successfully read from the lectern this way.

ePublish! – From manuscript to finished e-book in 10 easy stages

Borrowed a print edition of this book from the public library earlier this year. A total revelation! Made me think – Yes I can do this.
